NC State QEP Packways Website Redesign

Transforming a complex spreadsheet into a clear, student-friendly digital experience.

As part of my UX Design Internship, I worked with NC State’s QEP Packways to redesign their student resource for high-impact experiences. The original system was a dense Google spreadsheet that was hard to navigate and overwhelming for students.

Problem

Goals

Students were trying to learn about high-impact experiences through a dense Google spreadsheet that was hard to read, navigate, and compare options in.

Turn a spreadsheet into an accessible, visually engaging platform where any student can quickly understand and navigate NC State’s high-impact experiences.

Content Audit & Information Architecture

I began by breaking down the spreadsheet’s structure: units, experience types, descriptions, facilitator names, and requirements.

I analyzed the spreadsheet’s raw data to identify patterns, common attributes, and gaps in how experiences were organized. Using these insights, I restructured the information architecture into clear categories and navigation paths that better matched how students naturally search for opportunities.

Clear Readability / Sticking to Brand Identity

My client had specific requirements for the layout and functionality of this page, making it a key driver in defining the structure and direction of the redesign.

Evolving from Sketches to Screens

I translated my initial paper wireframes into polished digital layouts, refining the structure and visual hierarchy as the design evolved.

How I met the Client's Needs

In the homepage, I incorporated this carousel of "spotlight" events and programs in order to encourage students to learn more about HIE's.

I replaced the long Excel spreadsheet with searchable filters so students can quickly find eligible programs.

Clear Readability / Sticking to Brand Identity

I incorporated a grid layout inspired by the NC State Study Abroad page to maintain consistent branding and present the information in a clear, organized way.

I also used NC State’s typography and color system to ensure visual alignment with their existing identity.

Reflection

This project taught me how to turn dense, complex information into a clear and usable digital experience. Transforming the Packways spreadsheet into a structured website helped me strengthen my information architecture skills and showed me what it means to design directly around a client’s needs and constraints.
